My Story

Vee L. Harrison is an award-winning journalist from Chicago’s West Side. Her work appears in publications across the entire nation, covering and highlighting Black culture and Black narratives. Harrison is a local and international change agent, an influencer setting the stage for new voices in Black media and communications. During the course of her career as a journalist, she battled social structure through the lens of a Black woman raised in Austin, Chicago’s largest, poorest community on the city’s West Side in the 1990s.

Directly after receiving her B.A. from Columbia College Chicago in 2010, she served as a journalism instructor for inner-city youth in Chicago, promoting news literacy and Black-owned media. Harrison has spoken to over three dozen audiences across the nation, challenging the narrative of Black lives in relation to racial inequality, poverty, and social justice.

Televised coverage of her work as a Chicago based media influencer can be found on PBS’ WTTW Chicago, Fox News Chicago, WGN News, NBC news Chicago and ABC 7 Chicago.

Printed and radio broadcast coverage of Harrison’s work can be found in the Chicago Tribune, Block Club Chicago, The Trace, Bodega Boys podcast, WBEZ, iHeart Media, and from the city's former mayor, Lori Lightfoot, where Harrison received recognition on her bold narratives regarding minorities during the COVID 19 pandemic.

From this, Harrison’s name emerged in the city’s political scene and in 2023 she was appointed Campaign Press Secretary for Chicago’s current Mayor Brandon Johnson. Prior to the election of the Mayor, between 2019 and 2022, Harrison had begun to take on PR for more high profile clients, including Hollywood entertainers, Former NBA athletes and an appointed CNN Top 10 Hero.

Harrison continues to cover community news in addition to Black fine arts and culture across the nation for Pigment International, where she covered the 59th Annual Art Biennale in Venice, Italy in 2022 and the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in 2023. Her travels extend on both sides of the globe as she continues to cover cultural events annually on Martha’s Vineyard and Miami Beach.

Hood Healing is Harrison's first published book, however, she has recently published an award-winning and now-viral article, among many others, that has served as the catalyst of her book, Hood Healing:

The article, "A West Side House Party Exposes the Disconnect Between Young Black Residents, Chicago Officials and The News During COVID-19 Pandemic" was published by The TRiiBE in April 2020. This piece set the tone for Harrison’s career for decades to come.

In the Spring of 2023, Harrison launched her communications firm, Vee L. Harrison Communications. Her firm stands on the principals of reclaiming cultural narratives through public engagement, local advocacy and international relations.

Harrison is the mother of five children and a Bichon Poodle, residing in the Chicagoland area.
